Meatloaf has been a US family favourite throughout history, since the recipe was first devised to make a minimal meat supply go further. Peppered steak with cream sauce

Steak is a revered main all over the world, but with beef being the USA’s largest single export, it’s no wonder Americans have a particular affection for the dish. This peppered steak is a properly decadent meal that could be found served up at either a roadside diner or the fanciest of restaurants. Add a side of chunky chips along and a silky cream sauce flavoured with a touch of brandy for a main that just oozes luxury.

Spicy apple pie

What list would be complete without the all-American star? It’s a treat so beloved that a town in New Mexico has been named after it, it’s frequently mentioned in song lyrics, and the phrase ‘as American as apple pie’ is known all over the world. This little wonder takes a little longer to bring together, but as you cut into the hot crust and the scents of apple and cinnamon fill the air you’ll know it’s all been worth it.
