Looking for a tasty Mother’s Day recipe? We’d highly recommend these savoury scones flavoured with sage. The whole process will take you just 30 minutes from start to finish, leaving you with plenty of valuable catch-up time.

As with all Mother’s Day recipes, the key to making these bakes extra special is to tailor them to your mum’s taste. Serve these delectable scones up with a selection of her favourite cheeses, along with a generous helping of a fine pickle. Sweeten them up with a caramelised onion chutney, or keep the savoury flavours going with a rich tomato relish.
  • 1 tablespoons Dried Sage

  • 150 millilitre (¼ pint) milk

  • 225 gram (8 ounce) self raising flour

  • 1½ teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon Sea Salt

  • 25 gram (1 ounce) butter

  • 1 medium egg, beaten

  • 1 Pre-heat the oven to 230°C, 450°F, Gas Mark 8. Place 2 baking sheets in the oven to heat through. Meanwhile, mix together the Sage and milk and leave to stand for 10 minutes.
  • 2 Sift the flour, baking powder and Salt together and rub in the butter to form fine breadcrumbs, using a spoon stir in the Sage and milk. Bring the mixture together and then turn out onto a floured surface and knead very lightly.
  • 3 Roll the dough out to a 2cm (¾") thickness and stamp out eight rounds. Brush each round with egg and then place on the hot baking sheets. Cook for 10 minutes, until risen and golden. Serve with chunks of cheese and the pickle of your choice.
