Spiced Red Cabbage

Prepare your spiced red cabbage two days in advance and save time on the big day. Add this traditional accompaniment to any festive main course, and be sure to use Schwartz's ground cinnamon to add even more flavour!
  • 50 gram (2 ounce) butter

  • 2 medium red onions, finely diced

  • 1 medium red cabbage, approx. 900 g (2 lb)

  • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon Sea Salt

  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Ground

  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Nutmeg

  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

  • 2 medium cooking apples, peeled and sliced


  • 1 Pre-heat the oven to 180°C, 350°F, Gas Mark 4.
  • 2 Heat the butter in a large pan and gently fry the onion for 2-3 minutes. Finely chop the cabbage and add to the pan. Stir in the vinegar, Salt, Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Black Pepper. Continue to cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • 3 Add the apple and transfer to an ovenproof dish. Cover and cook in the oven for 1 hour or until the red cabbage is tender. Stir at the end of cooking and serve.
