Who’d have thought that Pancake Day originally started as a way to use up ingredients before 40 days of fasting? Today, it’s the perfect excuse to eat too many of our favourite sweet and savoury creations! These pancake recipes have been specially prepared to wow your friends and family – regardless of culinary ability. Frying pan newbie? Let’s start with the basics! Whipping up a bunch of pancakes is the perfect skill to add to your repertoire as they’re super easy – all you need is eggs, milk, butter, flour and a pinch of salt.
Here’s how to prepare your pancake mix:
- Grab a large bowl and sieve the flour and salt - even if you’re strapped for time, sieving is an important step as it makes sure there’s no lumps, giving you a nice and airy final product.
- Make a well in the centre and pop your egg and milk into the middle and mix, gradually adding in the flour from the side of the bowl.
- Pour the pancake mix into a heated frying pan and leave it to set for a couple of minutes.
Then it’s time for the fun bit: flipping the pancake! This one really is just a matter of practice – give it a couple of practice jiggles and then put a little oomph into your flip. Don’t worry if you don’t get it right first time – one of the best parts about learning to flip a pancake is getting to finish off the not-quite-perfect attempts.
